Michael Walter
Michael Walter is concerned with the history of music as a manifestation of cultural history. He has written numerous essays and books on the history of opera, the history of music in the Middle Ages, the relationship between music and politics, the history of music in the Weimar Republic and the "Third Reich", Haydn's symphonies and Richard Strauss and his music. His current main field of work is the history of opera from the 17th to the 20th century in Europe and the genre's worldwide distribution areas. His focus is on the social, institutional and legal history of opera, which also includes research on singers and audiences. He is currently working on a biography of the opera composer Gaetano Donizetti.
