Cristina Scuderi - Musicologist
The Italian musicologist Cristina Scuderi is currently working intensively on Giuseppe Tartini, on whose work she is organizing an international conference to be held at the University of Graz in December 2023. Her current research project will use Tartini's "School of Nations" (1728) as an example to investigate how musical skills were transferred from teacher to student in the 18th century. How did certain teaching methods spread through generations of students? How were they repeated and consolidated? What about the pan-European context between patrons and Tartini's students? Under what socio-professional conditions did pedagogical action take place? Tartini's figure is exemplary in that he transmitted different skills: instrumental, compositional, and theoretical. Outlining the identity of the "School of Nations" and mapping the European diaspora of its members makes it possible to follow the branches of a didactic tradition and understand the enormous influence it had on the ensembles at the courts of the time and on the musical institutions of each nation in general.
Her previous project focused on the reconstruction of the production system of opera in the Eastern Adriatic theaters in the period from 1861 to 1918, with special attention to the network between impresari, theater directors, singers, musicians and editors. The publication is published by LIM (the English version of the monograph is in print at Böhlau).
Cristina Scuderi is a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Musicology at the University of Graz, where she habilitated in 2021 and was nominated for the Teaching Award in the academic year 2019/2020. She is also adjunct professor at the Università Statale in Milan, and at the Universities of Roma Tre and Udine. She is also professor of music history at the Trieste Conservatory. She organizes the Festival of New Music "Contemporanea" and the International Composition Competition "Città di Udine".
