70 Years of the Song Contest – Points Are Relative

Logo des Eurovisionspodcast ORF Steiermark ©Eurovision

To mark this year’s 70th Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, ORF Steiermark is producing its own podcast – packed with insights, but also plenty of irony and a touch of humour. In episode 8, Saskia Jaszoltowski from the Department of Arts and Musicology at the University of Graz is interviewed on the topic of “The Song Contest: entirely (un)political”.

Three minutes to pack world peace, heartbreak or at least a wind machine into a single song – that’s the Song Contest, that annual, almost magical event where countries use music to assure one another just how unique they are – yet somehow all sound the same. But the Song Contest is more than just a singing competition, and every year it proves once again: music brings people together – and yes: points are relative…
Under this motto – and to mark the Song Contest in Vienna, which is also celebrating 70 years of the Song Contest – Martin Holzinger-Schink, editor at ORF Steiermark and a Song Contest fan for as long as he can remember, and Marcos Tritremmel, president of the Austrian Song Contest Fan Club, are producing a podcast that revolves entirely around the biggest music competition.

In episode 8, Saskia Jaszoltowski is interviewed on the topic of ‘The Song Contest: entirely (un)political’. According to its statutes, the Song Contest is strictly apolitical – yet it proves year after year that this is not the case, and this is particularly true in times of crisis.
