Three minutes to pack world peace, heartbreak or at least a wind machine into a single song – that’s the Song Contest, that annual, almost magical event where countries use music to assure one another just how unique they are – yet somehow all sound the same. But the Song Contest is more than just a singing competition, and every year it proves once again: music brings people together – and yes: points are relative…
Under this motto – and to mark the Song Contest in Vienna, which is also celebrating 70 years of the Song Contest – Martin Holzinger-Schink, editor at ORF Steiermark and a Song Contest fan for as long as he can remember, and Marcos Tritremmel, president of the Austrian Song Contest Fan Club, are producing a podcast that revolves entirely around the biggest music competition.
In episode 8, Saskia Jaszoltowski is interviewed on the topic of ‘The Song Contest: entirely (un)political’. According to its statutes, the Song Contest is strictly apolitical – yet it proves year after year that this is not the case, and this is particularly true in times of crisis.
