Horst Schweigert played a decisive role in shaping the former Department of Art History from the 1970s onwards with his extensive knowledge of art and his tireless regional research. After an ambitious degree in art history from 1964 to 1971, he began his continuous career as an assistant in 1972, focussing on the art history of Austria and Styria in particular, and was able to habilitate in "General Art History" as early as 1979. In 1986, he was entrusted with the management of the department for "Austrian Art History". He was appointed associate professor in 1989 and university professor in 2000. From 1983 to 2005, he worked with great expertise as a sworn expert for "Art and Antiques".
For the new edition of the Graz Dehio of 1960, he carried out an enormous inventory of sacred and profane art monuments on site in intensive field and archive research from 1974-1978. Further generations of students and visitors to Graz will open this Dehio in order to successfully utilise his precise data collection of art treasures. Numerous church guides and other publications followed. In 2017, his studies on the art history of Styria were given a well-deserved new edition. They guide you through the entire province and its numerous art eras.
