Sound as Score
How do musicians interpret scores when they are not available in written form as sheet music, but as sound? How must composers formulate such sound scores so that they are interpreted correctly? In order to answer questions like these the team of researchers are first embarking on a global search for scores that only exist in acoustic form and for composers who work with these scores. This research will result in the first overview of previously unknown performers and audio scores. In order to better understand these decision-making processes, the researchers go into a composition laboratory together with composers. There, composers will experimentally explore and analyze different methods of generating and interpreting audio scores. Supported by psychoacoustics and the aesthetic analysis of musicology, conclusions can be drawn for the composers: How must a score be generated so that it is interpreted in a certain way?

From October 4-6, 2024 the international workshop "Perception, Listening, Mimesis and Critique. Concepts and Theories of Aesthetic Experience" will take place at the University of Graz.
The workshop is part of the project "Sound as Score" funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), project management: Elisabeth Schimana - University of Music and Performing Arts (mdw)/Artistic Research Center (ARC), project partner: Susanne Kogler - University of Graz (KFU)/Institute of Arts and Musicology and Piotr Majdak - Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW)/Acoustic Research Institute (ARI).
