First-hand information on
the Master’s programme in Musicology and Aesthetics of the Audiovisual Arts
This interdisciplinary Master’s programme Musicology and Aesthetics of the Audiovisual Arts combines art history and musicology, focusing on topics at their intersection. The programme centres on shared perspectives and the systematic expansion of both disciplines – for example, through the increasing interconnection and blurring of boundaries between the arts.
Students engage with historical and contemporary forms of artistic expression, the history and theory of audiovisual media, and concepts such as synaesthesia, the Gesamtkunstwerk and intermediality. They analyse the socio-cultural dimensions of media practices and examine interactive and performative art formats, the role of institutions and mediation, current and historical developments, and the impact of digitalisation on the cultural sector.
Master’s Programme in Art History
The Master’s Programme in Art History is dedicated to the visual arts and visual culture of the past and present in their diverse media-related, social and spatial manifestations. The programme focuses on a critical examination of traditional temporal, geographical and hierarchical boundaries, allowing students to set their own priorities in terms of subject areas, historical periods and theoretical approaches.
The curriculum covers historical and contemporary art from various regions of the world and examines their interconnections, processes of exchange and power relations. Cultural studies, postcolonial and decolonial approaches encourage critical reflection on Eurocentric perspectives and open up pluralistic viewpoints. The programme is characterised by the close integration of art historical research, methodological reflection and interdisciplinarity.
