Contribution by Susanne Kogler at the conference "Philosophy of Contemporary Music"

How can philosophy and aesthetic theory engage with contemporary music? And why is music important for philosophy? These questions will be raised and addressed at this three-day conference organized by Forum Modernism in collaboration with Södertörn Philosophy and the Research School Critical Cultural Theory.

Susanne Kogler talks about “Time, Space, Material: Contemporary Music and Its Media”.

The conference, which will be attended by scholars from various disciplines, will explore the question of whether there is such a thing as musical material today, how the concept of tradition is to be understood and what kind of shifts have taken place in the discourse on form. Such issues have been crucial to the constitution of musical meaning in modern and contemporary classical music and in the arts in general. If they are no longer relevant, which concepts would be more relevant today?
The conference will be held in English and will take place in the auditorium of the Department of Culture and Aesthetics at Stockholm University.

Ingeborg Zechner’s monograph on Waxman, who “packed numerous careers into his short life” – he was a jazz musician, arranger, film composer, concert organiser and, as a composer and conductor, dabbled in opera. However, it is his film scores that have endured, not only in countless classics that are shown time and again, but also in the form of ‘soundtrack albums’ that remained popular for a long time.
