On the WDR podcast “Zeitzeichen”, Evelyn Urban discusses the fascinating life and work of Lee Miller—spanning art, war, and emancipation.

This episode of “Zeitzeichen” uses Lee Miller’s 1941 photograph “Fire Masks” as a starting point to shed light on the artist’s multifaceted life and work. After her modeling career ended, Lee Miller switched to the other side of the camera and, in the early 1930s, became a celebrated photographer in the art and fashion worlds. In Paris, she encountered the avant-garde and worked closely with Man Ray—a period during which the visual language of Surrealism had a lasting influence on her work. But Lee Miller wanted more: As an accredited war correspondent for the fashion magazine *Vogue*, she accompanied American troops across Europe and provided compelling coverage of the Allied invasion. Her legendary portrait in Hitler’s bathtub symbolizes her courage and her extraordinary perspective as a war correspondent.
