New publication "Dem Schönen zugetan"

Hans Brandstetter created a lasting monument to himself with the sculptural design of the Sacred Heart Church in Graz. It occupied the artist from 1889 to 1899 and was his largest public commission. In addition to numerous altars, the ciborium and the pulpit, Brandstetter created the bishop's tomb in the lower church, a magnificent masterpiece of historicism in Graz.

The publication is the result of a course at the former Institute of Art History at the University of Graz, in which students studied Hans Brandstetter and his sculptural works in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Graz and analyzed individual objects from an art historical perspective. The findings of the research, detailed explanations of the works, newly discovered source material and previously unknown design drawings are published for the first time in this book.

This publication, which is the first on the sculptor after the monograph by Brandstetter's son Bruno Brandstetter from 1965, shows the importance of Hans Brandstetter for the Styrian art landscape at the end of the 19th century and takes an in-depth look at his work in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche.
