Perspectives in Research: Eva Schler Fellows' Colloquium by Francesca Toso, Stefano Mulas, Clara Nicolay, Lorenzo Giglio
The Medici Archive Project (MAP) is committed to expanding scholarly access to its rich, yet still underexplored, archival collections. While MAP continues its digitalization efforts, it fully recognizes the irreplaceable value of direct engagement with original documents, their materiality, context, and physical features, which are essential to nuanced historical interpretation. To foster this hands-on research experience, MAP offers fellowships for graduate students, pre-doctoral researchers, and postdoctoral scholars working in fields related to early modern Italy (preferably with a focus on Tuscany or Medici history), enabling them to undertake specialized research onsite at the Archivio di Stato in Florence. Since 2013, and with the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust, and the Eva Schler Fund, MAP has guided emerging scholars at every stage of their research, providing expert supervision, professional development opportunities, and access to an international community of senior researchers. Fellows benefit from MAP’s interdisciplinary staff, its long-standing expertise in archival studies, participation in MAP-sponsored conference panels, and enrollment in MAP’s Paleography and Archival Studies Seminar. In support of this mission, MAP offers short-term fellowships of approximately three months, as well as longer non-stipendiary junior research fellowships for those eager to engage deeply with archival materials.
